After reading Divergent, I was completely hooked on the universe that Veronica Roth had created and the characters in it, so as soon as Insurgent was available to pre-order I paid for it to be delivered the day that it was released. I immediately attempted to read it, but stopped about a third of the way through because the story just didn't grab me in the same way that Divergent did. About six months later, I tried again, only to stop at the same point. Normally, if a book doesn't grip me enough to make me want to read it the first time, I wouldn't give it a second, let alone a third, attempt. However, because I loved Divergent so much, I really wanted to know how Insurgent ended, and there was something about the first third that made me want to read more. Even after finishing the novel, I'm not altogether sure what it was that made me continue, but I'm pleased that I did.
The main thing that made me stop reading is I felt that the storytelling gets more and more disjointed as it goes along. The ideas are excellent, but to me it just doesn't seem to flow. Keeping it as spoiler free as possible, certain events seem as though they're leading up to a climax, and then all of a sudden, something else comes up and the focus shifts to this. I also feel like the relationship between Tris and Tobias is a bit of an afterthought in this book. I understand that it's not a romance, but at times its almost as though the storytelling has to stop for a minute for some FourTris angst, or for him to forgive her for her crazy behaviour.
I'm glad I did stick with it the third time round though, as the ending is absolutely fantastic and I can't wait for the third book to be released! I'm also looking forward to the film adaptation of Divergent, I'm sure it'll be visually spectacular, and the cast looks amazing.
Thanks for reading,
Tilly.
