Review | We Were Liars by E Lockhart.

We Were Lairs by E. Lockhart
Rating: 4.5/5

I've been in a reading rut for so long, but this book completely changed that! I can't remember the last time I was so gripped by a book that I stayed up most of the night to finish it in one sitting. And I'm glad that I did.

I was immediately gripped by the storyline and characters, and I loved how early the drama was introduced as it gives you plenty of time to try and figure out what happened. That being said, I thought that it was so well done, and I never would have guessed the major twist at the end! It had me completely hooked, and the novel kept my attention all the way through. I found it intriguing, thrilling and heartbreaking.

The main criticism people tend to have with We Were Liars is the writing style, as the structure on the page is often a little haphazard at times, and I was convinced that the lines that were spread out across the pages contained clues, but apparently not. I personally didn't find it distracting, and I was gripped enough wanting to find out the conclusion that I generally tried to ignore it.

'Life feels beautiful that day. The four of us Liars, we always have been. We always will be. No matter what happens as we go to college, grow old, build lives for ourselves, no matter if Gat and I are together or not. No matter where we go, we will always be able to line up on the roof of Cuddledown and gaze at the sea. The island is ours. Here, in some way, we are young forever.'

Overall, I found it to be a clever, sophisticated, well written YA novel. The way that Lockhart presents the emotion was tragic, haunting, and strangely beautiful. It left me shocked, happy, sad, and inspired, and it's definitely one of those stories that stay with you for a long time after you've finished reading.

Thanks for reading,
