Cute Idea | New Years Inspiration.

“Start on January 1st with an empty jar. Throughout the year write the good things that happened to you on little pieces of paper. On December 31st, open the jar and read all the amazing things that happened to you that year.”

Around this time last year I spotted this floating around various platforms on the internet, and I decided I'd give it ago. Much to my surprise and satisfaction, I actually managed to keep it up all year. I'm sure there are things that I'll have forgotten about, but for the most part, I did it. My little piggy bank was pleasantly packed to the brim with notes I'd written down about things that made me smile throughout the year, some big events and some little things that I'd have otherwise forgotten. As nice as it was to read through all of those moments again, it was nicer to read the names of the people that were special enough to get a personal mention on a scrap of paper to say that they made me smile in some way. It made me realise how lucky I am to have such wonderful people in my life and to have experienced some great things.

I'm certainly going to do this again this year! If you like this idea and wanted to give it a go, here's a few tips:

  • Write things down as they happen. Don't do it weekly. As soon as something happens that you want to remember, make a note of it.
  • Always have little pieces of paper handy. I cut up several sheets of paper into small squares and made sure I had a stash by my bed and in any of my bags that I cary.
  • Focus on the smaller things. The big things you're going to remember anyway, but it's nice to read something that you'd completely forgotten about and remember how happy you felt in that moment.

Let me know it you're going to give it a go!
